Success Stories

We have coined terms including “hyper-sensitive customer service” and “performing the ridiculous” to describe what we do every day. “…it’s about the service!!!®” is not just a tag line, it’s a way of life.

To reinforce this concept, we routinely collect “success stories” about how our Associates have done just that. While a visit to our lobby will provide you a more comprehensive view of these stories, we have included a few interesting examples of what has become part of the culture at Professional Builders Supply:

In January, a Professional Builders Supply (PBS) truck carrying a large entry door for one of the company’s newer accounts was blocked at a subdivision entrance due to asphalt work. For many suppliers, that would have been a perfectly good reason why the delivery couldn’t be made at the time promised. But it wasn’t good enough for PBS. The two committed associates making the delivery locked up the truck and carried the door, on foot, more than a mile for an on-time jobsite drop-off.

“Van/ Dan, wanted to share a quick little story that one of our field supers tells everyone about his experience at Professional Builder’s: Field manager goes to your shop to pick up some plywood. First he is surprised that he is issued a ticket for the pick up. Apparently other vendors don’t track yard pick ups with paperwork. As if the ticket isn’t enough, he pulls into the shed (his words) to pick up the plywood. As he opens his truck door, one of the guys in the yard closes the doors and says “No, you sit, we got it.” Stunned, he says, “what, sit?” Yard guy says, “yep, you sit we’ve got it.” Field manager says, “I’m not going to just sit here and let you load my truck, I can’t do that.” Yard guys, (two of them now working to load the truck) “yep, honestly we have it, you sit.” As the field manager is telling the story, he gestures how the guys are lifting the plywood and setting it in the back of truck. Field manager continues with his audience. “Can you believe it, they wanted me to sit in my freakin’ truck and like take a nap or something while they’re loading my truck.” The story continues, “I couldn’t do it, I just couldn’t sit and let them work, so I jumped out and asked if I could help them load my own truck, but I didn’t wait for an answer I just grabbed a sheet on my own and started loading.” The story ends with the field manager asking his audience if they have ever been to PBS. If the audience says, “no”, the field manager explains in great detail the pick up process, the cleanliness of the shop, how everything is neat and orderly, how no garbage is laying around, how there are not tumble weeds blowing across the yard (not sure how that is relevant, but I have heard it several times now) and how everybody needs to go to PBS for a pick up b/c they will just not believe it. In summary, I believe that you have a true fan and advocate here in our company.”

Success Story From a customer E-Mail

Our Account Manager received a call from a customer looking for 100 pieces of special order “CDX” plywood – which is a material we do not keep in stock. The call came in after lunch and the customer needed in on the first load in the following day’s delivery. The delivery team arranged to have our truck stop by our supplier, pick up the material and have it delivered to the job site within one hour of the call. That is exactly what we mean by “Customer Commitment!”

Testimonials

“Dependable, efficient and professional…those are more than just words in a mission statement at PBS. They understand their customers not only want-but need-a reliable supplier that meets their commitments. The PBS team is dedicated to helping their customers be successful. They are one of the best building material suppliers in the country.”
— Ruth Kellick-Grubbs, Keltic & Associates, Inc.

“After 20 years in the building supply business plus 25 years covering the industry for four national trade publications, I’ve seen literally thousands of lumberyards throughout the U.S. The best have one thing in common: people who care about getting the job done right and can think on their feet. Yes, experience is important. But engagement is critical, and you can neither dictate that nor fake it. All you can do is create an environment that attracts top-notch people, and no one does it better than Professional Builders Supply.”
– Greg Brooks, Editor, LBM Executive

The ownership team at Professional Builder Supply, led by Van Isley, has been steadfast and unwavering in their recurring support of Operation Coming Home. Within every Operation Coming Home build, we can count on framing material, windows, house wrap, interior trim and roofing material from PBS. They basically provide the material to get us dried in. Professional Builder Supply, and the team of people that make it up, are valued trade partners of Royal Oaks all through the year. It Is just a little more special relationship during our Operation Coming Home builds. I hope this helps and it is the least I can do. Anything more you need, just let me know. Thanks and Merry Christmas,
– Rich Van Tassel, President Royal Oaks Building Group

“One of the true marks of a successful organization is to understand who and what are important. The entire organization at Professional Builders Supply knows that it’s customers and the communities they serve are truly #1. However, they do not stop there, they take it forward and actually donate their time, talent, and treasure. I know the asks are many for them and yet every time I reach out, I know they try to understand not how it will increase their brand, but how their involvement will make an impact in people’s lives.”

– Chris LaTurno
Executive Director/JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation )

I work for a family owned business where the owner stands behind their products and service every day with pride. That’s how Professional Builders Supply does business – they compete on price but they are unbeatable on service, always going the extra mile. It is that attitude that makes long-term business relationships possible and profitable. Van and his team give back to their community in many ways, too. What more could anyone ask for?

History

Our most important asset is our people. Our truck drivers and warehouse personnel are treated with the same level of respect as our owners. Our philosophy is simple; if we hire the best people, take care of them, treat them with honesty and respect, they will, in turn, do the same for our customers.

Professional Builders Supply was founded in 2003 in Raleigh with one fundamental premise …it’s about the service!!!® With a clear focus on providing the local, custom home builder with quality building materials and an unequalled level of service, Professional Builders Supply set about building a reputation based on dependability, honesty and integrity. The company has quickly developed a high profile in the Triangle Community recently being named one of the Triangle’s Best Places to Work by the Triangle Business Journal.

That award was followed shortly thereafter by being named the #2 fastest growing company in the Triangle….quite a feat for a company that is only 4 years old. Our customer list today boasts the names of most of the Triangle’s finest custom home builders. Give us an opportunity to show you the difference… it’s about the service!!!® Why Buy From Professional Builders Supply? Our “Customer Commitment” clearly defines what you can expect from us! Specific examples of unequalled Customer Service

Board

At inception, PBS formed a Board of Advisors comprised of original investors including Van Isley (CEO) and Troy Wilkerson (Wilmington Market President) and four non-employee owners. This was a carefully selected group of businessmen with valuable experience inside and outside the industry each of whom had longstanding relationships with Van. Two of the owners/advisors had previously owned and managed building supply operations which they later sold to a national consolidator. The other two advisors had been CPAs with Price Waterhouse where they crossed paths with Isley early in his career.

Today’s ownership team includes two of the original four non-employee owners and one additional non-employee owner who is an experienced real estate investor and has holdings in businesses in several different industries. Isley and Wilkerson continue to serve on the Board as does Steve Lochbaum, the Company’s CFO. who became an owner shortly after joining the company.

The Board of Advisors functions essentially as a full-fledged Board of Directors. Structured, formal, well-planned, quarterly meetings are held that include all owners. The level of sophistication brought about by the Board and the related interaction with the management team is atypical for a company the size of PBS.

Paul Breitbach

Paul was one of the founding investors of PBS in 2003. A North Carolina CPA and resident of Winston Salem, NC, Paul was the Group Managing Partner for all Price Waterhouse offices in the Carolinas. He later became the Executive Vice President of Finance and Administration and CFO for Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc. and was instrumental in the company’s growth and positioning for an IPO. Paul then served as the President of the Krispy Kreme Foundation where he was responsible for the company’s charitable giving and special projects prior to his retirement from the company. Paul has served on the Board of Directors of Old Dominion Freight Line, Inc. since May 2003 and as an Independent Director of The Shepherd Street Funds, Inc. Paul has also served on the Board of Regents at Loras College.

Mike Hendren

Mike was also one of the founding investors of PBS. Mike, a graduate of the University of North Carolina, was a Senior Manager prior to acquiring ownership of McCracken Oil & Propane Company, a local propane distributor. Mike spearheaded the company’s rapid growth both through acquisition and organic expansion and ultimately coordinated a merger with a propane wholesaler and the creation of Inergy Propane, a Master Limited Partnership that was shortly thereafter taken public. Today, through Hendren Investment and Management, LLC, Mike manages numerous investments in retail, residential real estate development, and operating companies. Mike is a past International Board member of the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.

McQueen Campbell

McQueen joined the Board of Advisors in 2008 when he acquired an interest in the company. McQueen currently serves as the President of his various business interests including Campbell Property Group, Inc., Minuteman Express Lubes, Inc. and McQueen Farms, Inc. McQueen and his family continue to operate numerous convenience stores and a fuel distribution business in Eastern North Carolina.

Our Corporate Team

Our Management Team, while relatively young and energetic, collectively possess over 100 years of experience specifically in the building supply business. This same group has had direct responsibility for the management and oversight of more than 25 individual building supply operations, including 6 different individuals who have managed a location for a national building material supplier.

Van Isley
– Chairman and CEO

Professional Builders Supply was Van’s brainchild born out of a desire to be closer to home, a burning entrepreneurial instinct and a frustration with the lack of focus on the customer and the employee at a big company. Van saw a unique opportunity in a market where the local, custom builder was quickly being overlooked by most suppliers. He put together a team of highly qualified employees and a team of investors who were not only highly regarded businessmen but also personal friends. Van grew up in Burlington, North Carolina where his father was a custom home builder. He attended East Carolina University and graduated with a B.S. in Accounting. More about Van
